Karnataka Anna Bhagya Scheme 2023

One of the pre-election commitments made by the Congress Party was the Karnataka Anna Bhagya Yojana, which they consistently promised to implement if they were elected to govern Karnataka. Now that the Congress Party has emerged victorious in the Karnataka elections and is poised to form the government, they are obligated to fulfill their pledge to launch this scheme. Once implemented, the Yojana will become one of the cornerstone social programs in the state of Karnataka.

As per the party’s announcement, beneficiaries currently receiving 5 kilograms of rice under the existing Anna Bhagya scheme will now receive 10 kilograms of rice for free. This commitment aligns with the party’s promise to provide 200 free units of electricity per month through the Gruha Jyothi Yojana and offer housewives Rs 2,000 per month under the Gruha Lakshmi program if they win the upcoming state elections.

Update as of July 10th: Cash distribution for the Anna Bhagya Yojana is set to commence in Karnataka at 5 p.m. today.

Starting from Monday evening, low-income families across Karnataka will receive direct cash transfers into their bank accounts instead of the 5 kilograms of rice that the state has faced challenges in procuring for its Anna Bhagya scheme. The Food and Civil Supplies Minister, KH Muniyappa, has confirmed that every eligible recipient will receive the funds within 15 days.

Following the standard rate of Rs 34 per kilogram of rice from the Food Corporation of India, each Below Poverty Line (BPL) individual’s account will be credited with Rs 170 per month. Under this scheme, the Congress Party had committed to providing 10 kilograms of rice for free to BPL families every month, with 5 kilograms each contributed by the Central and state governments.

On Saturday, Karnataka’s Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, announced that the Anna Bhagya program will commence disbursing funds to Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholders on July 10. Due to challenges in rice procurement, the government opted on June 28 to offer cash instead of additional rice kilograms to BPL families.

Emphasizing the prompt transfer of funds for this month, Siddaramaiah clarified that the fund transfer process would kick off on July 10. The revised plan stipulates that the government will provide 34 rupees per kilogram of rice, with the Union government covering the other five kilograms. This change aims to ensure a swift distribution of funds to the beneficiaries.
